Titration Method Analysis of Titanium Dioxide:
Introduction:
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a white powder commonly used as a pigment in various industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food industry. The purity of TiO2 is determined by the titration method. This method measures the amount of an acidic or basic reagent required to neutralize the sample. The aim of this analysis is to determine the purity of TiO2 using a titration method.
Materials and Reagents:
- Titanium dioxide (TiO2) sample
- 0.1 M Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
- 0.1 M Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
- Phenolphthalein
- Burette
- Volumetric flask
- Stirring rod
Reagent Preparation:
- 0.1 M Hydrochloric acid (HCl):Dissolve 35.5 g of HCl in distilled water and make up to a final volume of 1000 ml.
- 0.1 M Sodium hydroxide (NaOH):Dissolve 40 g of NaOH in distilled water and make up to a final volume of 1000 ml.
- Phenolphthalein:Dissolve 0.1 g of phenolphthalein in 50 ml of 95% ethanol.
Procedure:
- Prepare a sample of TiO2 by weighing 0.5 g of the sample into a volumetric flask.
- Add 50 ml of 0.1 M HCl to the flask and stir the solution with a stirring rod until the TiO2 has completely dissolved.
- Fill the burette with 0.1 M NaOH solution.
- Add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein to the sample solution.
- Slowly titrate the solution with NaOH until a pink color appears, which indicates the endpoint of the reaction.
- Record the volume of NaOH used in the titration.
- Repeat the titration three times to obtain an average value.
Calculation:
The purity of TiO2 can be calculated using the following equation:
Purity = (Weight of TiO2 / Volume of NaOH used in titration) * (Molarity of NaOH)
Conclusion:
The titration method is an effective and accurate method for determining the purity of TiO2. By measuring the amount of NaOH required to neutralize the sample, the purity can be calculated based on the weight and volume of the sample and reagents used. The results of the titration method should be reproducible and consistent to ensure accurate and reliable results.
