Determination of Assay Content of Vitamin C by Titration Method

Objective:

Materials:
Vitamin C tablet

2% w/v iodine solution
0.1 N sodium thiosulfate solution

Pipette
Beaker
Stirring rod
Method:
Crush a vitamin C tablet and dissolve it in a known volume of distilled water.
Fill a burette with 2% w/v iodine solution.
Pipette a known volume of the vitamin C solution into a beaker.
Add a few drops of 2% w/v iodine solution to the vitamin C solution and stir. The iodine solution will react with the vitamin C, forming a yellowish-brown complex.
Slowly add the 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate solution to the vitamin C solution until the yellowish-brown color disappears. This is known as the endpoint of the titration.
Record the volume of 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate solution used.
Repeat the titration process with a new sample of vitamin C solution to ensure accuracy of results.
Calculation:
The assay content of vitamin C can be calculated using the following formula:
Assay content of vitamin C = (V x N x 1000) / W
Where:
V is the volume of 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate solution used in the titration.
N is the normality of the 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate solution.
W is the weight of the vitamin C tablet used.
